Cambernon, 25km W of St. Lo, France: [Best played as Allied] The failure to secure the initial objectives of Operation Cobra was a serious setback for the US VII Corps. General Collins was forced to commit some of his mobile armored reserves sooner than planned (on July 26th) to complete the breakthrough and prevent the German LXXXIV Corps from withdrawing to the south through Coutances. On the American right, Colonel Boudinot's CCB, 3rd Armored Division and the 18th Infantry Regiment, were given the responsibility for clearing the road through Marigny and spearheading the way to Coutances. The German 353rd Infantry stubbornly held the vital road junction at Marigny before finally being overrun in the early morning hours of the 27th, delaying the American timetable yet again. Colonel Boudinot immediately threw three armored teams west to clear elements of the 2nd SS Panzer and 17th SS PzG divisions from the hills near Cambernon overlooking the St. Lo-Coutances highway. Further tightening the noose on the German retreat.
