Djebel Abiod, 110km WNW of Tunis, Tunisia: [Best played as Axis] Following the American and British "Torch" landings along the coasts of Morocco and Algeria in November 1942, both the Allied and Axis powers rushed forces into Tunisia where the final climatic battles of the North African Campaign would be fought. Unlike the open desert in Libya, terrain in northern Tunisia resembles the rugged countryside of Sicily, broken by steep mountains and pierced by rocky passes and broad valleys. It was for control of these passes and valleys that the coming battles would be fought. The first ground action took place on 17 November between a provisional British force built around the 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment holding the Madene River crossings and crossroads near Djebel Abiod, and a small armored kampfgruppe scouting west from Bizerte under Major Witzig. This small but fierce fight would be typical of the battles to come in the months ahead.
