Hill 40, 5km S of Agat, Guam: NIGHT [Best played as Axis] With fewer men, tanks, artillery and a much larger area to defend, the Japanese defense of Guam was expected to be less effective that of Saipan. Nevertheless, as the men of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade fought their way ashore south of Agat, they soon discovered a willing enemy and terrain that favored the defender's tactics. There would be no rapid or easy conquest of the island! The American troops that dug in along the beachhead perimeters to endure the long night of 21 July were well aware that the odds favored an organized enemy counterattack before the sun rose again the following morning. Imperial Headquarters prescribed such a strategy and it had been rigidly followed on both Siapan and Tinian. The most serious attack came from the south against the 3rd/4 Marine Battalion occupying captured positions around Hill 40, northwest of Mt. Taene. Having waited impatiently while the marines overwhelmed the beach defenses, Colonel Suenaga personally led his reserve 3rd/38 Infantry Battalion and the remnants of the 1st/38 Battalion, reinforced by a company of tanks, in a determined charge against the American lines.
