Martynovka, 140km E of Rostov: NIGHT [Best played against Human opponent] Operation Edelweiss, the German attempt to capture the Caucasus, had commenced and the divisions of Army Group A were fanning out to the south and east. At the Sal River crossings west of Martynovka, Soviet General Timoshenko had prepared an entire motorized Corps to ambush the Germans advancing towards Elista. The 3rd Panzer Division recognized the danger before the trap could be sprung and pinned down the enemy with a frontal attack. While the bulk of the Russian forces were engaged, Major-General Mack commanding the 23rd Panzer, ordered Combat Group Burmeister to make a wide sweep to the south and take the Soviets from the rear. In the early morning hours of July 28th, the panzers struck the 297th/115 Cavalry Regiment screening the area south of Martynovka. The Russian horse soldiers put up a brave fight but they were no match for the German's armored steeds. But help was coming as the 113th Tank Regiment rushed to their support.
