When the two battlegroups of 4.PzDiv crossed the Polish border they met very little resistance. The advance was quick, and was delayed more from destroyed bridges and bad road conditions than from enemy fire. Upon reaching the village of Opatow the Germans found the village lightly defended. The commander decided to continue the advance, and at the same time clear the way for the following elements of the division. II./12. SchRgt attacked the village, while I./36. PzRgt continued the advance eastwards. I./12. was ordered to turn north towards Rebielice, as the plan was to reach the Kocinka river before the end of the day.
