Napoleon has shifted the axis of his attack to the east. Instead of crossing the Sambre at Charleroi he has chose to aim directly at the Prussian army and will cross near Chatelet. Two large columns of French cavalry can be seen working their way down to the Sambre from surrounding hills. They are the vanguard of the entire French army. Dust clouds indicate a large body of men is closely following the cavalry advance element. Standing in their way is Jagow's 3rd Prussian brigade along with the 24th Infantry regiment of the 1 brigade. The Prussian commander must balance delaying the advance with preserving his troops to fight another day. The French desire to cross the bridges and continue the advance as quickly as possible. The Prussians can expect some limited reinforcements. French reinforcements will continue to pour into the area all day.
