I graduated in the bottom half of my class at West Point, and my first assignment was with the 2nd Dragoons, with whom I served in the Second Seminole War. I served in the Mexican War as well, and rode with the Texas Rangers after the war. I returned to West Point, and published a book which influenced almost every civil war soldier. I resigned my commission in the US Army when my home state seceded, and was commissioned as a Colonel in the Confederate Army. I served throughout the war, my dependability figured in my nick name, and I survived the war, although my son did not, having died in March 1865.

Who am I?

William J. Hardee who published: Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics for the Exercise and Manoeuvres of Troops When Acting as Light Infantry or Riflemen

nickname, "Old Reliable"
Very good David.

William Hardee's book (refered to by the much abbreviated title of Hardee's Tactics) became the primary hand book for drill of soldiers in both armies.
