You cannot go wrong in purchasing the Matrix edition.
For the price of one you get East Front, West Front, and Rising Sun all on one disk that you do not need after install. Or, you can download from their website.
They are supporting it but, no one is supporting the old series.
You can still find players who have both the Matrix edition and the old TalonSoft editions loaded into their computers.
I have the TalonSoft disks but, I use Matrix exclusively.

And with the 1.03 patch soon to be released for the Matrix Edition there will be about 12 new scenarios for West Front
