I have decided to join Raz in giving a blow-by-blow account of our current game.

here's the situation at turn one:

So here's the plan...the briefing keeps telling me to attack hard and fast before the enemy has a chance to deploy his forces.  I hate that, because it usually means you're going to run right into the teeth of a heavily fortified position.  But darn it, I hate losing the opportunity to surround his troops massed around Tomsk before they can be reinforced by troops arriving through Kotlas (all the way in the back of the photo).

So turn one I drop arty hard and fast on the flag at Tomsk (red arrow).  I can already see armor there so my mortar drops smoke to break up LOS (grey arrow) while my light armor advances and tucks itself behind the house at the road bend (blue arrow).

By the end of turn one I have knocked Raz's halftrack and a truck (i think?) without any return fire.

So far so good.

If anyone would like to comment, feel free, but please, no advise...wait till I've screwed up before posting what I should have done.  I don't want Raz to have an excuse for losing Smile

Mixmaster
Congratulations to the noble red army forces for finding a computer literate commander! Good read and very clear. Looking forward to reading more Smile
Having just finished this scenario with RD, it will be interesting to see how you fight as the Russians, compared to how it played out for me.

Valor

This is a fascinating scenario, and one that tests the mettle of the russians severely, as there are some key terrain features of this map that if used properly, can lay the German player low.

No offense to spike, but the "fist" tank attack will not work here when playing against a seasoned Russian player. This is where the thinking man's games comes into its own over the more brutally minded tank commanders that oft lack subtlety and finesse.

Cheers!

Prove it.. ;)

It's turn 4 and guess what??  Nothing's Happened!!!

It's really aggravating:  I pushed my t-70s out in the open hoping to uncover some of Raz's guns, but other than the sound of a small AA gun firing, I came up empty.  I need to push forward blind now or risk wasting more turns.

I've decided to send two jeeps down the road where they will offload two platoons behind the church on the left.  Hopefully the church will break LOS of any enemy troops stationed in the cemetary to the front of the church.  4 T-34s will move forward to support these platoons while area firing into the cemetary.  They'll also be handy to deal with the Pz III to the left of the church.   The two leading T-34s will follow the jeeps down the road while area firing on the large crater located on the hill to the right of the church.  This is where I think Raz's AA gun might be.

Meanwhile I'm pushing forward to the left (not shown) and right with T-70s to capture the small flags on the map's edges.

Again, it'd be great to hear how others would have handled things so far, so speak up!
I, like you chose the 3 flags in your screen shot to be my primary targets, and split my forces equally between the far right flag and the church flag. My opponent opened up on me at about turn four, probably because I likewise dropped arty near the church on the opening round to cover my approach as much as possible.
Well the advance worked....for Raz, that is Smile

As soon as the movie began, Raz's AT gun (located in the cemetary and not the hill to the right) opened up. By turns end, I had lost 3 T-34s and a jeep. The only good news is I think I KO'ed his Pz III to the left of the church and the gun can't last long with everything I have shooting at it.

I'm quite disgusted at this point, but need to push forward with this thing...who knows, the winds of war might change!
We're up to turn eight now. I've KO'ed Raz's armor and AT assets that were based around the church and cemetary, but have lost an additional T-34 that was KO'ed by a platoon of PZ IVs coming down the road from Kotlas. I'm hoping to keep my armor hulldown in the large depression on my side of the battlefield while his tanks trundle into view.
