So I decided to do my own test of sharpshooter movement.
Here is how the test is setup:
Lanes of open ground 665m long split by tall pines. US platoon leaders all with +2 stealth ratings siting at one end on the lane; at the other end a sharpshooter and a tank hunter squad. 16 different groups - 4 each of elite/crack/vet/reg TH and sharpshooters. The platoon leaders are half reg half elite (although I later remembered that tests showed that unit quality doesn affect how well a unit spots).
Simple test. Gave a move order to all the german units to walk through open ground towards the US platoon leader to see at what distance the units were spotted.
Results:
Tank Hunters - All 16 tank hunters were spotted as soon as they got into the open gound - 665m
Reg Sharpies - 320/320/320/270
Vet Sharpies - 285/267/265/265
Crack sharpies - 210/210/195/190
Elite Sharpies - 175/170/155/125
So how am I going to use this data?
If I have a vet sharpshooter in a battle, and I want to get the unit into cover without being seen, I know I need to be about 325m away for reg, 300m away for vet, 225m away for crack and 200m away for elite. That is if I am crossing open ground.
Of course sharpshooters cannot hold ground. But having eyes across the entire battlefield is one of the most important things a player should do - at least for the first 10 turns of a battle.
I might do some more tests with brush/rocky ground/rough terrain & fast movement.
Thanks CT.... pity the Coil couldnt get his act together and do this...

Did another test. Same thing except the lanes are 80m of open ground in front of the US platoon leaders and then all brush. All 16 snipers walked unnoticed through the brush but then were spotted as soon as they got into the open ground.

I know it. What is wrong with that guy!
One more test.
This time I did a fast move over brush and rocky terrain towards the US platoon leaders. the last 80m was open ground. All 16 sharpies made it to the open ground before being spotted - and were quickly eliminated.
Pretty surprised that all the sharpshooters stayed hidden moving fast in brush and rocky terrain.
I was also very surprised to see that movement through the brush was much slower than through the rocky terrain - rough estimate would be that brush terrain is 50% slower. Combine that with the fact that you have slightly better cover in rocky than brush - I will always be looking to move through rocky as opposed to brush.
Thanks Col T! Were there any tank hunters in the latter two tests for comparison?
I suspect The Coil has developed a case of clicky allergy. It has been known to happen. It is generally cured by giving them lots and lots of red clickies, which seems to have a soothing effect on their temperament.

Ah, where to start...
This is no way to treat a one time Blitz ladder leader (you heard me) and tactical genius. Bootie, you're lucky they didn't implement the graduated clicky system yet, because that one would get you a yellow for sure. McIvan, that blatant call for red clickies is just the kind of behavior from a mod on this board that drives people away (
). And CT, it's nice to see you do some of the legwork for once...here's a (meaningless until they implement the 'clickies for prizes' system we're all looking forward too...ask Red Devil about it, he seems really excited to see it up and working) clicky for your work...
And please, let us all cease this crazy talk of red clickies...I for one have never, ever, not once, red clickied someone (not even you know who). Everyone do your part to spread the joy of green clickies. Like me. I already gave one to CT. I'll give one to Bootie in a second to show there are no hard feelings. I'll even give one to POS, just because it's the right thing to do. Oh yeah, and one for McIvan...oh, whoops - already hit my limit of three for the day...sorry McIvan...
If only they'd remove that 3 per day limit...
And I promise, promise, promise to quit changing the topic of every thread to clickies. Most of the time.
Thanks for the tests, CT - helpful, they were.
Were there any tank hunters in the latter two tests for comparison?
Added some THs to the brush/rocky test. None of the THs made it out to the open ground before being spotted. The regular THs in the rocky ground were spotted before they initiated their movement orders (170m from the woods, 80m of it open ground). The other THs got spotted very quickly (I didnt bother looking at hard numbers since for me it is irrelevant) compared to the sharpshooters - who all had made it to the open ground before being spotted on the previous test.
Something else to note - with the THs involved, some of the sharpshooters were pinned and killed while still in the soft cover - so that is something to think about.

Thanks. They are strangely reaffirming.
And since you did try to do the test for me, and since I promised two clickies, and since they are meaningless anyway - here are two clickies for you. enjoy

Oh my oh my. I suspected when I read your post there would be a little clicky tomfoolery going on. That's the kind of reckless use of red clickies that shouldn't be tolerated on these boards. Something must be done...
We could wait for the moderators to step in and censure you...but will that happen? I doubt it. We all know the clicky-industrial complex doesn't work for the small guy. It just kow-tows to the special interests. How long will we let these boards be held hostage by the terror of a few who hand out red clickies, how long will we allow a few red clicky spewing bandits drive away the most prolific posters on this board, how long will we sit idly by while reputations are trashed indiscriminately, how long will it be until one of my opponents sends me a turn so I have something to do besides author clicky posts?
There must be justice! There must be an end to the tyranny of the clicky system! It is your duty, O citizen, to help bring this about...it is your patriotic duty...

Here's what you need to do: If you oppose the clicky system, cast your vote against it by posting a win in a 5000pt quick battle against Colonel Talvela (he said it was ok). If you want to see the clicky system continue as is, post a loss in a 5000pt quick battle against me. At the end of the week, we'll tally the results.
Stay tuned for further ways you can help the fight against the clicky plague. Also, don't be afraid to send me some money. It'll help the fight. Trust me.
