Combat Mission 2: Barbarossa to Berlin by

This is more of a simulation than a game. Platoon level with assorted crews for support weapons including snipers, individual tanks or platoon formations with a time scale at one minute real time. So gamesters better have some tactical warfare knowledge for this one or else read up on World War 2 battles histories to get a handle on how to order units around here. The most extraordinary feature in this game is the WEGO. That is, players assign their orders to any or all units, click "End Turn", then the Combat Mission engine resolves these orders/moves simultaneously. Play solo, the AI is tough, or play against others (tougher). Team play is the highest level of simulation. There is limited visibility/intelligence of what the enemy has on the battlefield so players need to learn how to proceed into an unknown hostile environment. Yes, that's warfare in real world terms. Find them, pin them down, flank them and kill them.
Combat Mission 2 - Barbarossa to Berlin is a very deep game. I recommend using the Tutorial and with the Editor, setup small engagements to test and learn about the units and tactics. The A.I. is strong but does not compare to playing against a live opponent(s), goto theblitz.org for opponents. You can play by TCP/IP, PBEM, teams, hot seat or solo. There are many battles (scenarios) included with references to their complexities. Battles range from the arctic circle, Finland all the way down to the Black Sea. Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, Austria and Germany. The Game Editor is powerful: design a scenario, have one created randomly, with access to modifying all sorts of terrain, weather, temperature, visibility (the levels of fog are awesome), readiness, morale, casualty status, ammo amounts, type, etc.
Assets include aircraft of different configurations, artillery including rocket barrages, tanks, assault guns, field guns, anti tank guns, machine guns of every type, flame throwing tanks and man packs, RPGs, bazookas, and all the small arms used by the countries listed. So crank up the sound, this game is in stereo and each weapon has sound files that will rock your desk and wiz over your head. The soldiers are realistic, they talk in their native languages, holler and scream as combat begins. Soldiers, guns crews and tanks will react independently as the battle begins. Dependent on their training and/or experience. So don't expect your men to stand and die when everything goes to hell. Men will retreat and sometimes run. The men, weapons and vehicles are organized into platoons, companies and battalions with Leaders. The Leaders are key factors to winning and losing a battle. Where they are and how they're used is the key to victory. They bring Morale, Combat, Leadership and infiltration/Sneak modifiers to the mix.
As you have already surmised, this is not a game for kids. Barbarossa to Berlin is easy to learn but tough to master. There are several online clubs to find opponents and get hundreds of more scenarios to download along with graphics mods to alter the appearance of uniforms and all equipment...or you can make your own personalized look or emblems.
This simulation of the War in Russia is top shelf and well worth the price (Battlefront.com sells it in a bundle with other Combat Mission titles now).
See you at theblitz.org

Dog Fight - PzC T41 Enter Rommel

Here we begin an AAR of a HTH T41 scenario, #01a_Mersa_Brega_PBEM.scn. This is an exciting little gem of a scenario. There are several approaches to the game for the Axis player. Here is but one of them.
