Rising Sun Far East Project

Instructions for adding on the Russian units of the Far East commands from 1938-1941 for conflicts with Japan, Japanese units from 1937-1941 conflicts with China and Russia, the forces of Manchukuo, the forces of the MPR, the forces of the KNIL (Army of the Dutch East Indies) and adding on to KMT Chinese and Thailand air units from 1937-1945 conflicts with Japan to fight in RS. Included is the sequence to have the complete RS Far East package.
The earliest date that can be set on the oob is JAN 1941. If at some furture date this can be fixed in the game program then the oob of the Japanese will be ready, but you can make scenarios for earlier battles now. Dates that earlier formations types were available are often noted in parenthesis, for your information.

Rising Sun Far East Project has been made by Wyatt A. Kappely, Charles R. Hall, Chris Perlberg and George Smithson.

Important note: Some of these files will replace a number of those already existing in Rising Sun. So proceed only at your own risk and in a careful, informed fashion. I take no responsibility for any problems that might occur. The installation should be pretty easy. Rising Sun should work as normal, even with this new capability. But any additional patches from Talonsoft would undo the changes made. You must own RS in order for this to work.

Installation of each army add-on:

  1. Install "Rising Sun".
  2. Unzip .zip file into the Rising Sun directory.
  3. To play, do just as you'd normally play RS.

Installation of all add-ons:

  1. Install "Rising Sun".
  2. Unzip the KMT Chinese Army add-on into the Rising Sun directory.
  3. Unzip the Chinese Communist (Allied) Army add-on into the Rising Sun directory.
  4. Unzip the French-Thai-Dutch Army add-on into the Rising Sun directory.
  5. Unzip the Chinese Communist (Axis) Army add-on into the Rising Sun directory.
  6. Unzip the North Korean Communist Army add-on into the Rising Sun directory.
  7. Unzip the Red Army Far East add-on into the Rising Sun directory.
  8. Unzip the Manchukuo Army add-on into the Rising Sun directory.
  9. Unzip the Mongolian Army add-on into the Rising Sun directory.
  10. Unzip the China War Japanese add-on into the Rising Sun directory.
  11. To play, do just as you'd normally play RS.

Here is a short characterization of each army. Each army is put separately for download.

  • China War Japanese - With this addon the Japanese in RS will now go back as far as July 1937, the begining of the Sino Japanese War, but the earliest date that can be set on the oob is JAN 1941. If at some furture date this can be fixed in the game program then the oob of the Japanese will be ready, but you can make senarios for these early battles now. Dates that earlier formations types were available are often noted in parenthesis, for your information.
Major additions are the Square Division which was gradually being phased out disappearing by mid 1942, but was a common type in 1937-41 in China. Also historical oobs for Japanese forces at Khalkhin Gol and Lake Khasan are included as are maps of those areas. Early aircraft types used in the battles vs the Chinese and Russians are also included as are armoured patrol boats that featured in Japanese opperations on the Yangzi. This version is for evaluation purposes. It is not yet perfect, but is quite functional. Comments are welcome.
ChinaWar oob creator and RS Far East associate is George Smithson and RS Far East Project creator is Wyatt A. Kappely
  • Japan's Manchukuo - This mod will allow play as Japan's Manchukuo regime from 1932 to 1945. This includes Manchukuo participation in the Nomonhan incident up to the Soviet-Mongolian invasion of Inner Mongolia and Manchuria in 1945. All of the units included are explained in the unittext.txt. All comments are welcome!
Japan's Manchukuo mod creator is Charles R. Hall
  • Mongolian People's Republic Mod - This mod will allow play as the Mongolian People's republic from 1939 to 1945. This includes Mongolian participation in the Nomonhan incident up to the Soviet-Mongolian invasion of Inner Mongolia and Manchuria in 1945. All of the units included are explained in the unittext.txt.
Very special thanks to George Smithson for his invaluable research and advice. All comments are welcome!
Mongolian mod creator is Charles R. Hall
  • KMT Chinese Army Add-On - This allows scenarios with Communist Chinese units to be created and played with for the Axis side.
  • Red Army Far East -Adds in EFII Russians including units from Alexey Kalinin's mod1 archive file and major additions of the Pre war Soviet fromations of the late 1930's and early 1940's not included in EF II many of which where in the Far East Region after they had been phased out in the rest of Russia. Also historical oobs for Russian forces at Khalkhin Gol and Lake Khasan are included as are maps of those areas. Early aircraft types used in the battles vs the Japanese are also included.
At this point there are no scenarios. But the editor will work with the Russians. There are no LCG's or DCG's. We merely provide you the tools to make your own. The Russians in RS now contain the Far East commands from 1938-1945 for conflicts with Japan , but the earliest date that can be set on the oob is JAN 1941. If at some furture date this can be fixed in the game
The Russian Far East add-on was created by George Smithson and Wyatt A. Kappely.
  • Rising Sun Communist Chinese (Allied Side) V3.0 Add-On - This allows scenarios with Communist Chinese units to be created and played with for the Axis side.
  • Rising Sun Communist Chinese (Axis Side) Add-On - This allows scenarios with Communist Chinese units to be created and played with for the Axis side.
  • Rising Sun French-Dutch-Thai V2.0 Add-On - This allows scenarios with French, Dutch, or Thai units to be created and played with for the Allied side. Added in Vichy French of Indochina as allies for 1940-42. The Thai Army add-on contains elephants.
New separate files with each forces are available for download, too. These files were created by Wyatt A. Kappely, Chris Perlberg with some input and corrections by George Smithson.
  • Rising Sun North Korean People's Army Add-On - This allows scenarios with Communist Chinese units to be created and played with for the Axis side.
  • Rising Sun North Korean People's Army Add-On Patch

Wyatt Kapply did this mod originally, but a fellow brought this to my attention, when I mentioned I was well versed enough in modding to fix this.

    1. There was an incorrect date in the platoon04.oob that was restricting the 76mm AA gun from showing up in the Rgt, fixed it
    2. The 120mm Mortar would not fire, the data for it wasn't entered in the weapon.pdt/pdx, fixed it.
    3. The icon association for the Bn HQ's(foot) didn't exist, replaced it with an appropriate icon.
    4. The icon for the jeep had a white star, removed it.

This patch was done by Mike 'Warhorse' Amos

Allied Bulgarians Mod for East Front II

created by Mike Amos

This mod is for the Allied Bulgarians, for EF II. The dates are from November 1944, to May 1945.

To install, you will need to have the latest version of EFII. It's recommended to make a temporary folder, and unzip all files into it. All files EXCEPT the pictures zip go into the main EFII directory. The pictures zip are unzipped into the pictures folder, if you don't have one, you will need to make one. As of right now there are no scenario's for the mod, I will be making these and posting them in the scenario's section later. A list of all new units is available separately. This is a list of all the Allied Bulgarian units for the EFII add-on. This will give you a reference for buying them for PBEM, or scenario building, the planes are listed also.

Divided Ground Unofficial Patch V1.4u  *** updated ***

Unfortunately Talonsoft's Divided Ground was released with numerous errors. Chris Perleberg has done an excellent job of correcting the oobs, however he has only scratched the surface of the problems relating to unit values. This patch is my attempt to correct these problems, I make no claim to have corrected all of them, but I think you will find that the game plays much more realistically in all it's 4 time periods (1948,1956,1967 and 1973). My patch is completely harmonious with Chris's version 2 patch and Talonsoft's official 1.02 patch.

Modern Soviet/CIS/Russian Mod for Divided Ground

created by Paul D. Adaway
This add on covers the period 1948 to 1999. I have tried to be as comprehensive as possible in the choice of platoons available in the mod, and nearly every platoon has a detailed unittext description and picture (see optional pictures download). It contains a revised DG OOB editor by Matthew Cornford which opens up the entire period from 1948 to 1999.

I have strived to provide scenario designers with the tools required to make new scenarios using the Soviet army. I have only included one scenario myself, to give a taster of what is possible. It is called Northeim 1975, and depicts a brigade level meeting engagement between Soviet and US forces during a hypothetical invasion of West Germany.

Optional Pictures for Modern Soviet/CIS/Russian Mod

created by Paul D. Adaway
Updated pictures file for Divided Ground, including pictures for Israeli, Egyptian, Iraqi, Jordanian and Syrian units, the new Soviet units and US units (for Vietnam Mod). Just copy this entire Pictures folder into your existing Divided Ground folder, overwriting any existing Pictures folder.

EF II Night Graphics

Please Note: There are two versions to the EF II night graphics

Instructions for Downloading:
  1. Download the first file if you own Rising Sun. Copy the included .bmp file and the files I've written down in the HowTo.txt from your RS into your EF2 folder.
  2. Download the second and larger file if you do not own Rising Sun

WF Night Graphics

Please Note: There are two versions to the WF night graphics. These both involve downloading the zip packages for EF2. If you do not own RS then there is an additional WF download. It is recommended that you download the West Front Scenario Equalizer as well. Lastly you will need to be sure that you have the WF 1.06 patch to play night scenarios.

Instructions for Downloading:
  1. Download the first file if you own Rising Sun. Copy the included .bmp file and the files I've written down in the HowTo.txt from your RS into your EF2 folder.
  2. Download the second and third files if you do not own Rising Sun

WF Scenario Equalizer

While EF2 is using only one format for all scenarios, WF uses different formats from different updates & Bps, so I've written a tool to bring them all to the WF 1.06 standard. It processes the early WF scenarios, WF BP & WF SL and (hopefully) all custom scenarios.

Instructions for Downloading:
  1. You need to download the VBruntime.dll dll to execute which must be copied into the Windows/system folder.
  2. Download and install the WF v1.06 patch. You need this patch to run the WF Scenario Equalizer Please Note: That the 1.06 patch is not the offical patch used in the club.
  3. Download and unzip the WF Scenario Equalizer into your West Front directory

Alexey Kalinin's East Front 2 Unit Mod

This Mod file adds some bells and whistles to the Russian forces in EF2.

  2. Unpack the zip to EF2 folder.

ASDN EF2 (US) Mod Version 1.02yy

This mod adds and changes a bunch of minor issues that players have been clamoring for. Changes bunker assault rules, general assault rules, retreats, concelaments rules, and various other minor things

Combat Mission

Combat Mission Beyond Overlord end turn randomizer

A condensed version of the BaBaDcond turn randomizer for CMBO. This is a program that doesn't make CMBOnd turns variable like in CMBB just randomly decides if you are both going to click cease fire in a certain turn. Helps avoid cheesy flag rushes in turn 19 of 20. The original program was over 5MB this is a gutted version that does not self install or register file types, but is fully functional and is 507KB zipped. Includes vague instructions which should be all you need.

HPS Operational Campaigns Series

Belgian mod HPS Simulation's Fulda Gap '85

created by Kevin "Hub" Peltz

This package adds the Belgian Para-Commando Rgt (1st, 2nd, 3rd Bataljon, plus AT Company) to Fulda Gap. It contains an updated OOB with the Rgt attached to West German II Korps. It also has a unit box with flag, unit photos, and graphic symbols included for use in creating scenarios. Unzip into your main FG '85 directory, making sure that "Use folder names" is selected in the Winzip menu to insure that the directory structure is kept intact.

"The British" scenario for HPS Simulation's Fulda Gap '85

created by Kevin "Hub" Peltz

The .zip file contains the following:

  • New OOB adding British "Roverforce" to West German III Korps. Adds Russian "117th MRD" to 3rd Shock Army. 117th MRD is a "Class B" division with all T-62 MBT and BTR-70 APC's.
  • New British unit pictures with matching unit.dat file. Includes Chieftain MBT, Swingfire AT, Rapier SAM, Scorpion Recce, Striker, Lynx AH, Gazelle OH, more, plus spares to expand OOB later if desired. Also new British unitbox with flag and new 2D unit graphics map symbol display. Russian unit picture of SA-9 Gaskin SAM included, plus updated unit .dat file (replaces ZSU-57 in 117th MRD).
  • New scenario "The British" with new map file.

Picture Upgrade for HPS Simulation's Fulda Gap '85

created by Kevin "Hub" Peltz

This mod replaces the game unit box graphics. There are two zip files in all: FG85_NATO.zip and FG85_WARPAC.zip. Utilising both will update all the unit graphics in the game with 183 black and white photos, plus each unit box will have a new country flag graphic. As well, the red box that appears around a selected unit on the 2D map has been made a little thicker, for added visibility at higher resolutions. Be sure to read the included text file for installation instructionsand further notes.

Panzer Campaigns/Modern Campaigns Printable "Word" Parameter Data Tables

created by Adam Parker

It's simply re-sized, re-arranged and compiled each of the official PzC/MC Parameter Data Tables into a print-ready Word Doc format. At present there are 12 official PDT's and this zip contains them all. Adam Parker aims to keep them up to date too.

Panzer Campaigns/Modern Campaigns Victory Screen Packs

created by Adam Parker

Panzer Campaigns/Modern Campaigns Victory Screen Packs: This is modified art for the screens that pop-up at the conclusion of a scenario. Rather than just providing a picture for victory/draw/defeat, these screens now also provide some motivational historical wording to give gamers an idea exactly what they've achieved. Each pack contains an Allied Victory Screen, a German Victory Screen and a Draw Screen with art relating to the battle at hand. In the case of Middle East 67, there are Israeli and Arab Screens.

Panzer Campaigns/Modern Campaigns Information and Terrain Boxes

created by Adam Parker

This is modified art for the Information Boxes and Terrain Boxes that show gamers various information along the top/bottom or side of their game screens depending on the specific preferences gamers are choosing. The Information Box art contains pictures relating to the specific battle at hand and the Terrain Box art relates generically to the Theatre of the game - East Front, West Front, Med Front or Middle East. These mods have been developed to increase the aesthetic value these interface tools offer and more importantly, to better highlight the information they contain!
Each zip contains Vertical and Horizontal Information and Terrain Boxes for each game.

Panzer Campaigns Scenario Editor

reated by Richard Bancroft

This editor is designed to edit elements of existing scenarios that are difficult to edit through the game editors, while leaving the original OOB entries alone, with the exception of the ability to edit unit names and types. There are 6 tabs to the editor, allowing editing of on map units, reinforcements, AI orders, releases, air availability, and finally it has a printable OOB section.
It can be unzipped and used from any location, except that the file nations.txt must be located at \program files\hps simulations on the drive with the editor itself.

Bulge '44 Victory Sounds

created by Bas Kreuger

To keep a bit more in line with the historic atmosphere of the games, I have searched for and found several vintage WWII songs, marches and national anthems. In my opinion, more fitting to be played with your final result in battle.

  • The Bulge was a clear US victory (although other Allies were involved as well), so it is fitting that the Allied victory music is the US National Anthem. Not only to celebrate a US victory, but equally as serious to commemorate all those who had fallen in this last desperate attempt by the Nazi's to end the war in the West.
  • The German victory, song is more optimistic in nature, a marching song for "victorious" troops! It is a song to the volatile Goddess "Viktoria", the troops constantly praising her, "Sieg Heil Viktoria!". Not that it helped them a lot :-) But might the Germans have won the Battle of the Bulge, they might have sung this song while marching into Antwerp.
  • For a bloody draw, I have chosen the appropriate "Last Post", more a piece of music of the Allied tradition than the Axis one, but surely fitting for both sides.
Installation

Kharkov '42 Victory Sounds

created by Bas Kreuger

After the frantic battles for Moscow that were fought in the winter of 1941, in spring 1942 Stalin tried his hand in the offensive for the first time.

  • Besides the massive assaults by the Red Army, the partisan war behind enemy lines was also much better organised. Therefore, I have chosen the optimistic and powerful song "Amúri Partizánok" ("I love the partisans"), a very Russian song, as the Allied victory music.
  • For the Germans, "Erika" was very appropriate. "Erika" is another of those typical German marching songs. My father used to tell me that he hated them singing those songs during the war in occupied Holland, as the subject is a tender flower growing on the heath, not very much in line with the brutal and heavy handed occupation policy. When hearing this song, you can see the German 'landsers' marching through fields of grain or sunflowers in the fertile grounds of mother Russia!
  • The song for a draw should reflect the massive slauhter on the Eastern Front. "Swjaschtschennaja Woina" is such a song, somber and dark, full of melancholy of endless Russian steppes, covered with the dead and wounded of those terrible battles.
Installation
Extract the three files in your C:\program files\HPS Simulations\kharkov '41\media map, they will replace the original files there. If you want to keep those original files, please rename them first.

Middle East '67 Victory Sounds

created by Bas Kreuger

For the MC Middle East 1967, I have chosen two National Anthems (Israeli and Egyptian) and a Klezmer song. Appropriate Israeli and Arab-Egyptian military music was hard to come by, but the National Anthems of those two countries serve their purpose well.
"Hatikva", the Israeli National Anthem, is in a modern version, as no version played by a military band was found.
The Klezmer song ("Freylehks") was chosen for its melancholical nature, reflectng the effect a draw would have had in most of the Israeli - Arab wars.
Installation
Extract the three files in your C:\program files\HPS Simulations\middle east '67\media map, they will replace the original files there. If you want to keep those original files, please rename them first.

Normandy '44 Victory Sounds

created by Bas Kreuger

Normandy 1944 was a most crucial battle for both Allies and Axis, victory or defeat could chance the whole course of the war. So the music should reflect that.

  • I have chosen "We're going to hang out the washings on the Siegfried Line..." as the Allied victory song, for this was a goal of the Invasion; to bring the Allied Armies to Europe, to liberate France and to bring war to Germany itself, on and over its borders. As most, if not all, Allied Armies were involved in the Normandy Invasion, I took "The Siegfried Line" as an appropriate piece of music, not directly connected to one country, but optimistic in the result of the Invasion.
  • For the Axis victory, I took the German marching song "Lied der Sturmartillerie" ("Song of the assaultguns"), as it is a typical German marching song full of confidence in their superior armoured vehicules (hear them sing "panzer voran, voran!" ("armour in front, in front!"). Would they have won the Battle for the Beaches, their 'sturmgeschütze"would have played an important part.
  • More difficult was the choise of a song for a draw. This song should reflect that a draw was more disadvantageous to the Allies than to the Axis, but no real somber Allied song could be found. I found this song "And the band played Waltzing Matilda" very appropriate, as it deals with the costly stalemate of the Allied amphibious landing at Gallipoli in WWI and is very atmospheric.
Installation
Extract the three files in your C:\program files\HPS Simulations\Normandy '44\media map, they will replace the original files there. If you want to keep those original files, please rename them first.

Smolensk '41 Victory Sounds

created by Bas Kreuger

For Smolensk 1941, I have selected three pieces of music appropriate for that period.

  • Allied victory probably not to be played often in the game, as it will be hard to win as the Soviets): The USSR National Anthem After the Tsarist Regime had been toppled in 1917, its National Anthem had to go too (incidentally, that was "God save our gracious Tsar", just like the UK National Anthem!) and a special song was composed to reflect the victory of the Great Socialist Revolution! This song was discared when the Wall came down.
  • Axis victory: the (un)official German National Anthem in the Nazi period, the "Horst Wessel Song". This marching song of the NSDAP (German Nazi Party) was composed in honour of the SA man Horst Wessel, who was killed in the line of Nazi duty (as the story goes, more to the truth was that he was killed in a bar brawl!). It became the second National Anthem, besides the more famous "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles".
  • For a draw I have chosen the song "Ich hätte ein kamarad" ("I had a friend"), a fairly somber song, often played at burrials of German soldiers. As a draw in Smolensk 1941 is IMO a better result for the Soviets than for the Germans, I found this moody German song more apprpriate.
Installation
Extract the three files in your C:\program files\HPS Simulations\smolensk '41\media map, they will replace the original files there. If you want to keep those original files, please rename them first.

Tobruk '41 Victory Sounds

created by Bas Kreuger

The war in the deserts of North Africa was a bit different from other battles in WWII. More gentlemanlike and certainly more honorable. Maybe this is why its subject has stayed so popular? Also the characters of Rommel and Montgommery, colorfull generals duelling it out in the hot sands of Lybia, add to the myth.

  • A suitable song for an Allied victory could not be found (at least, no music. I found three songs: "desert blues", "party at El Alamein" and "Rats of Tobruk" that would be appropriate, but haven't found a MP3 or WAV file yet). So I took the British National Anthem as the Allied Victory music.
  • For the German victory it was not so difficult. There was a most suitable song "Heia Safari", a un-German like humoristic piece of music. Originally composed during WWI to celebrate the daring campaign fought by German troops in East Africa, it was adapted to the battles fought in the Western Desert. Part of it goes:
Das deutsche Korps in Afrika, heia heia Safari!
Und wenn auch noch so wild
    der brit'sche Löwe brüllt,
Es nützt ihm nichts sein großes Maul,
    Wir jagen ihn zu Tod.
The German Korps in Africa, heia, heia safari,
how wild the British lion roars,
his big mouth does him no good,
we hunt him till he's dead....

  • Finally, the song for a draw. Here I have taken an Italian song, "In Africa si va", a very Italian, sunny piece of music. Although the Italians fought well, hampered by bad equipment and bad leadership they suffered many defeats. This seemed to me an appropriate song, I could see them singing it in victory, in a draw, but also marching towards their POW camp!
