flag rush

Here is an idea to counter the infamous ''last turn'' flag rush.  Rather than have games 30-40 turns long and one or both sides just sitting back, waiting to assault until the clock has almost run out....simply design Quick Battles that are no more than 5-10 turns long.

It's all the turns you really need for this kind of game.

Re: flag rush

In CMBB & CMAK you can set the time limits to variable and noone knows when it will end, so flag rushes can be very destructive..

Re: flag rush

I think your suggestion sucks IMO. A 5 turn game leaves no room for any kind of tactical decisions whatsoever.  By trying to take out the last turn flagrush you are making the whole game a flag rush.  Players with any respectability will only flagrush if they feel they have a chance of holding the VL.

Re: flag rush

A game of 5 to 10 turns leaves no time for maneuver, just a mad headlong rush.
The game does have a variable end turn feature as Red Devil mentions so that you're not sure when the game will end.  The problem though is that drags on as long as a flag is in doubt and usually gives the attacker the time needed to finish grabbing.
An alternative I'd like to see is where a game can possibly end BEFORE the turn limit.  That should prevent the end game rush as well.  Give enough turns for reasonable maneuver, but make it so a game listed as 40 turns could end anywhere from a few turns earlier to a few turns later in some random hidden decision the game makes at start and is not changed by the tactical situation.  So it might be plus or minus 10 percent, or 4 turns either way in this example... Re: flag rush

Or make a 260 turns game, so that both players got mad of waiting and rush onto each other seeing no flags at all, just smashing all aroung like frenzy! (180th turn approximately) Smile

Re: flag rush

what if the real objective were to anhnhilate ur opponent instead of grabing some imaterial flag ( that wouldn't be there in real life), yes i know that things like raod junction and hilltops are very important to stratigic plan but when it comes down to it the reason why they are stratigic is to give u an advantage over ur opponent with ultimate aim of his total demise,

this has been an other excerpt from IMHO by lordmasik

key terrain

You make a good point.  No real need for flags as any important terrain will be decided by the players maneuvers.  Then the only reason for flags would be if they are trying to portray some historical situation.

Re: flag rush

Strange.  When I saw this post I thought to myself.  Wow, thankfully it's been a long time since I've been the victim of a gamey last turn flag rush.

Must have been a jinx since I just got the final turn back from one of my opponents tonight (turn 40 of 40 ).  Out of nowhere, a never before seen T8 recon car and M8 HMC come rushing up to my flag in the last 15 seconds of the final turn.  Of course my 1/2 coy of infantry would have easily handled them with all their panzerfausts but they never got the chance since "time ran out".

What a waste of my time. I think I'm done with CMBO for good.

Don't give up CMBO because of one pin-head!

Re: flag rush

Okay, my emotions got the best of me.

In all fairness, I must admit that, now after seeing all the forces on the map, it was probably less of a last turn flag rush and more of a good example of why I *really* like the fact that CMBB and CMAK have variable endings.

It turns out my opponent had a whole platoon of infantry in the woods behind the vehicles.  Too bad CMBO never gave us a chance to fight it out.
